No Man's Land

A poor weary soldier
walked with his comrades.
In an empty desert,
they marched on by squads.

But this humble soldier
didn't know what to do.
"If this be a mission,
yet for what and whom to?

Is this for my country,
a celebrated cause?
Or some individuals
who care not for loss?"

He remembered once when
this fever began.
He was then a young lad
and an only son.

With crows for his neighbors
and hays for a bed,
he stayed with his father,
his mother long dead.

As all fiery souls be,
he wanted to fight.
May it be for glory
or for what is right.

But his father like all
such fathers could be,
forced the boy to silence
his pressing folly.

But silence is feeble
against ambition.
Thus, the boy went away
to chase his mission.

Neither kiss nor goodbye
was sent in return.
Yet now this poor soldier
bore a grave concern.

With a hole in his chest and
the gun on his hand,
he's on his back dying
here in No Man's Land.

Tears fall down silently,
the pain has long gone.
He then prayed for forgiveness
from the wrong he's done.

From turning his back on
his biggest mistake.
And for taking the lives that
weren't his to take.

As he gazed to the skies
nearing his last breath,
a crow circled the heavens
to honor his death.

T'was the last thing he saw
before Death came to pass.
Yet he knew, yes, he knew...
he was home at long last.
