EMPTY NEST, a poem by Mandy Baldwin, France
Good Bye Poems & Life Poetry
Mandy Baldwin, France
EMPTY NEST
It's quieter now, and the old cats, once kittensCan sleep in the sun, remembering, as I do.But yesterday was now, once, andIt wasn't the good old days, then. The faces you washed and kissedwere older each summer, then older again. And the little bare footprints on the pathThat dried in the sun of those summers pastAre larger than yours, nowAnd walking alone;and the eyes that looked earnestly up into yoursSeeking the wisdom that only you'd giveNow regard you fondly but briefly thenLook past you and over your shoulder, when(having tough new adventurous lives to live)They leave with a hug and a grin and a wave. And it seems only moments since you walked awayImpatient with all that had gone beforeBut nervous as you heard the closing door. And you know that for all the books you readAnd the nights of fever, sat by their bedAnd the fun you hadAnd the tears you'd drythat nothing was ever so loving or braveas opening the doorAnd smiling goodbye.
