Open Fire
I saw you todaytossing love letters into an open fireletting our memories burn and twistin the somber settingof a silent flameI know that you're hurting loveI know that what I've done is wrongand that tears can't extinguishthis kind of roaring flameBut don't let it be overdon't let our love disappeartoo much blood and inkhave been spilledto just turn it all to smokerising out of an open fireIf I meant anything to youand if our love has to be a memoryplease bury it under lock and keyand don't let it spread in the windsthat cut through this autumn airI know that you owe me nothingespecially not my dignity or my respectbut I'd like to be remembered my loveeven if only in spiteI want my words to have more meaningthan just a column of wind-whipped smokeand I want our memories to last longerthan a small box of hand-written letterstossed into the heartof a roaring open fire.
