Poem

Stalked!

The scattered clouds are floating loosely,
hedged in by blue sky profusely.
We are up in the high country of Zion
hunting a killer mountain lion.

The shadows broadcast late afternoon.
We hope to find the puma soon,
before the sun sinks behind the cliffs
and our power advantage shifts.

The horses' shoes clank on loose shale
as we hug the walls of the rimrock trail.
They shy away from the sheer edge-
there are no u-turns on this ledge.

The stealthy killer knows how to dodge;
it's tawny body is camouflaged.
It's doubtful that it will be found
among the spires of chestnut brown.

I suspect that the crafty feline
who was out front, has circled behind.
It's probably perched on a rocky knoll,
peering down on us below.

Our rifles are loaded, ready to fire
as the rimrock trail progresses higher.
The fugitive cat will be hard to spot.
We might not even get off a shot.

It has been hours since we've seen a track.
The wily beast may have doubled back.
now I see things are changing fast,
this hunting trip could be our last.

The horses are spooking, snorting fear.
They can sense the big cat's near.
When they saw the overhang, they balked
because now the stalkers are the stalked!
