TURNING 40

life's meant to start at forty,
or so they all seem to say
thirty-nine, three.six.four days
forty's just one day away

only 20 years till pension day,
nagging in the queue
a loaf of breads gone up 3p
that's all it seems to do

wrinkles all around your face,
hair greying, recently dyed,
brought up in the swinging 60's
the truth may be denied.

why does forty sound so old
why does everyone pretend
that they are only twenty-one
(plus another nineteen)!
