MY BROTHER

Lying awake one warm Friday night in January 2000,
the phone rang, it was the middle of the night.
It was my nan,
calling to say
My brother had gone swimming in Renmark
and had disappeared without a trace.

The divers went in
and back out they came
holding my dear brother,
he had passed away.

I imagine his last breath
and how horrible it must have been
to know you are about to die,
never to smile again.

As he took that last breath,
not precious air but a breath of murky water.
I wonder why it happened to him
and how it isn't fair.

My brother was only 22
his life barely begun.
He left two sons, one he'd hardly met
and the other wasn't even one.

Every time my nephew smiles
I see my brother's dear face
and realise I have a living tribute
to make certain the memories never fade.
