CHILDHOOD FLEES
what a child! doe-eyed and fancy freelaughter flowing like a pristine streamhair tumbling into her eyesdancing feet and dancing eyesa lilting voicea symphony sweeter than Orpheus could makewho would switch off that sound?wipe her eyes clean of the joy?lock her spirit in a dingy roomserving tea in glass tumblersto men driving trucks on Jaipur highwayslearning to walk so she doesn't triplearning not to talk or to thinkwill she ever learn to read?see the stars and know which one is just Mars?will she ever, ever leaveThat little way-side inn?The boy who shines shoesOn a narrow Delhi side streetWhistling tunes while juggling his brushgets kicked sometimesby a rude customersometimes he gets a friendly patthat makes his dayalmost never gets an extra coinWill he ever know what it feelsTo wear Nike running shoes? Will he ever learn to spellHis intricately long last name?
