GRANDPA'S SPIRIT
You held me closeupon your kneesWith liquorice breathand gentle, kindly smile.Recited battle songsfrom trenches long ago.I learnt from you themagic clickerty - click!A captain's wisdomnaming sixty six,And many precious secretssoldiers knew.Yet, though hen peckedby Nan, you could still mock,And to your charge confide that"Women! yap! yap! yap!"From which I learntthat silence Isa higher power. And when we bade adieuin 'fifty six,Confiding that your timehad finally come.I did not grieve, how could I?knowing that, one dayWe'd meet againand in the Godhead claim your spirit now.
