To the horses of poverty Cold and alone They bear the harsh wounds Dealt from cruel hearts of stone To the horses of poverty No green grass in sight Surrounded by filth Through the day and the night To the horses of poverty In slums of the poor Starved, bones show starkly No deep bed of straw To the horses of poverty Their life is their death They drag heavy carts Whipped ‘till their last breath To the horses of poverty Each face a sad tale Battling onwards Through drought, flood and gale To the horses of poverty Diseased and afraid These great, noble creatures Abused and enslaved To the horses of poverty Go now, rest in peace Be free, fly to heaven There your pain will cease.
