As a seed drops, tumbling, falling, it hits the ground and wonders why, As a babe lies, crying, calling, he looks up at his mother and wonders why, As a seedling bursts, sprouting, growing, up through the earth it wonders why, As a child plays, looking, learning, he finds a small tree and wonders why, As a tree sits, watching, waiting, a child stumbles upon him and it wonders why, As a boy rests, sleeping, dreaming, in the shade of a tree he wonders why, As a tree kneels, swaying, moving, a boy lies beneath him and it wonders why, As a man walks, loving, holding, with his new bride he wonders why, As a tree stands, aging, knowing, two lovers pass by him and it wonders why, As a father stands, aging, knowing, with his son by a tree he understands why, As a seed falls, tumbling, falling, from the tree far above it that tree understands why.
