COUNTDOWN

The Start of the Year 2006 in London

Few hours remain of two thousand and five
as the coming year is about to arrive
Determined to welcome the new year in
along with songs for all to sing
Within the walls of the Public Home
upon the ground where so many roam
Spirits are served throughout the day
inviting those with ambition to stay
Achievements reached throughout the year
plus interest shown to persevere
During the period close at hand
with yet much more to understand
The hours of daylight start to fade
replaced by audio and visual aid
A gathering of folk throughout the strand
forms as planned, with a great expand
All there to see the moment arrive
with striking displays of fireworks alive
Around such structure of the ground
to be well lit up by light and sound
Darkness falls together with time
as more folk arrive to hear the chimb
Of the thirteen ton bell hanging within
the well known landmark and due to begin
All is so silent and so very still
A COUNTDOWN begins and adds to the thrill
TEN seconds remain of the long hour
NINE seconds pronounced with such power
EIGHT seconds reached in the decline
SEVEN seconds left to the deadline
SIX seconds to go with the flow
FIVE seconds linger to the show
FOUR seconds of time to persevere
THREE seconds away from such a cheer
TWO seconds from the chimbs of Big Ben
ONE second now to the start yet again
The STRIKE of the bell HEARD all around
almost cut out by CHEERS that are found
Of two hundred thousand spectators to see
and welcome the new year in by the quay
A fire-work display, so well planned
presents such a picture in full demand
So many colours there on show
together with sound to state "HELLO"
Reflections within the Thames do appear
as a show of rockets light up in full gear
Various colours, yellow and blue
followed by such as green and red too
Eventually reaching in silence brought by
search lights upon the Millennium Eye
All adding more to the London display
and opening two thousand and six today
