 Poem:

BABY'S AWAKE

Bump, bump, thump, thump
Rhythmical and faint
interrupted by the screech of chattering Magpies
Tick, tock, tick, tock
clock muffled by the heavy duvet
pulled around my ears
Sizzzzzzz wife's quiet breathing
Rumble, clatter of distant cars
early morning workers-beep beep
Bump, bump, thump, thump
tiny infant feet
clearer more urgent
If she could speak
I suppose she would say
Where are you Mummy? Daddy?
Gaa, coo, gaa, goo-babytalk
Movement audible. Cot creaks
time to get up
The rustle of warm bedclothes
Bare feet on linen sheets
replaced by bare feet on wooden floors
The jingle, jangle, rattle of hot water
surging through heating pipes and radiators
Squeaky door hinge-needs oil
Open door to a bright, smiling face
Click light on
Hey you!
What's all that thumping about?
You little rascal!
Her bright eyes sparkle in rested contentment
Time to get up little lady
