 Poem:

A SONNET TO AMERICA'S PASTIME

In the green yard of old,
Mine love languished,
The cheer of the crowd anguished,
And twas then my heart was sold,
Thy allure, wrought in sweat and tears,
Has brought many to grief and shame,
Young boys have fallen, suffering, while trying to chase thy fame.
And I, the humble writer, have observed this over the years,
Fie! Years! wasted on one evening,
And defeat’s bitter ichor has touched their lips,
Tearing the cloth of victory and filling it with rips,
I have observed this leavening,
but Hark! A love that Romeo and Juliet could not appall
the name of the love is baseball.
