NEEDLESS DESTRUCTION
NEEDLESS DESTRUCTIONThe summer day was warmingAs my cane and I were strollingAlong the beach front promenadeWhere sunbathers were lolling.Anticipating, I looked aheadFor the ice cream stand I knew,When a vision of lovelinessDistracted this man’s view. She was long. She was lanky. She was tall. She was lithe. My old heart went pitter-patWith every flash of thigh.I deliberately stopped and waitedFor the approaching VenusSo as not to accelerateThe closing gap between us.Blond hair flouncedHer bosom bouncedMy mouth was desiccated. But not surprised,I rationalized,What others appreciated. Then almost up to meShe looked distantlyAnd briefly our eyes met. Then from the foldsWithin her clothesShe produced a cigarette. The fantasies I had seenAnd images I’d createdAll became circumspectAnd abruptly evaporated. It was long. It was white. It was slender And compact,Injecting carcinogensDown her bronchial tract.Instantly I visualizedA tall and stately treeWith branches lifted heavenwardFor all the world to see. But invisibly down deep insideThe core was soft and rottenInsidiously decaying thereUnknown and forgotten.I was numb.I felt sick. I felt that I’d been cheated Which maddened meThen saddened meWith every puff repeated. As she modelled by Our shoulders briefly brushed. I must confessUnder duress,My inner self was hushed.Sun tan lotion Replaced the oceanAs she breezed on byOn her lone sojourn So unaware of myPowerless concern.I dared not look back, but didAt the departing masterpieceThat had died upon the easelOf my heart.I could not help but wonderWhat damage was asunderAnd when deadly symptoms would start. The customarily tasty coneLost its flavour in worry,And all too soon was finishedAs in time, I feared, would she.
